Prepare Your Roof for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is just around the corner. Hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November 30th, it’s quite a long time. Now is the time to prepare your roof for hurricane season if you haven’t started to think about it already.

Hurricane season can be a scary time of the year, especially if you live in an area which is prone to hurricanes, such as our area of Venice and Sarasota. With the exception of a few years ago, we have been pretty lucky recently. Check out these tips to prepare your roof for hurricane season.

Prepare Your Roof for Hurricane Season

Pre-Season Inspection

Prior to the start of hurricane season, it’s a good idea to have a professional roofing contractor out to your home to be sure there are no pre-existing problems with your roof. If there are any, a hurricane will only make these problems worse. They will inspect to be sure there are no holes, or punctures. To be sure that all the flashing is properly attached. Verify that all attached portions are attached properly. And make sure that any gutters, drains, and downspouts are attached and working properly.

Clean Gutters

Take notice of your gutters and drains. Have them cleared out if they aren’t already. The last thing you want is for a hurricane to come through and have them get full of water. This water will sit and damage a roof if left sitting there. Sitting water will only increase the chances of water entering your home.

Tree Trimming

If there are trees near your home, now is the time to get them trimmed. Hurricane strength winds can destroy anything in their path. Inspect your property for tree branches that are hanging over your home, as well as for any dead or broken branches that can easily harm your home or roof.

Secure Documents

Part of any hurricane preparation should include securing documents. This includes any roof warranties, insurance documents. Photos of your home and roof. And all contact information for insurance companies, and contractors.
