Tips to Maintain Your Shingle Roof

Here in south Florida, it’s important to maintain your shingle roof. We have many different elements to deal with, and if you don’t maintain your shingle roof, it can breakdown over time, and cause problems for your home, your biggest investment.

Maintain Your Shingle Roof

Things that can damage your shingle roof include:

  • Natural elements such as the sun, wind and rain
  • Build-up such as mold, mildew, and algae
  • Changes in humidity and ventilation
  • Improper roof installation or improper repair/poor craftsmanship

Many of those things we have no control over, but there are some things we can do to help prevent damage from happening because of them. When our roofs are built at a slanted angle, there is a reason behind it. This allows for water to run off of them. This helps for debris, leaves, soil and rodents to run off the roof. When it doesn’t, these things can absorb water and cause damage to the shingle roof. It’s important to inspect the roof to be sure there’s nothing lying around on it potentially causing damage.

It’s also important to check the gutters and downspouts if your home has them. A good time to check them is at the beginning of summer and winter. Check to be sure they’re not blocked with leaves or any other type of debris. If they are, water can’t flow through, and it will back up and cause moisture to sit against, and eventually damage the roof.

Maintaining the seals is another important part of roof maintenance. The seals to the flashing, vents, skylights and chimneys if your roof has them are what connect the shingle roof to these elements on your roof. These seals can become cracked over time and develop leaks. Proper maintenance can help to prolong the life of your shingle roof.
