Your Shingle Roof is Leaking, Now What?

No homeowner wants to have a shingle roof leak, what a pain! Your roof is there to protect you and your family from the sun, wind, and rain. It’s also meant to keep critters out. Without a roof, all of your belongings would be ruined, as well as the structure of your home. So should your roof start leaking, what do you do?

Shingle Roof

A roof leaking is a serious issue. Even a hole that is very small can cause serious damage when it is left festering. It can damage the roof, the integrity of the roof system, your ceilings, electric work, and walls. Being in the Sarasota area we deal with humidity already, having moist walls and ceilings will only invite mold and mildew to grow, so take these steps to deal with a roof that is leaking.

  • Clear out the area where the leak is happening. It’s bad enough that your roof is leaking, don’t let the leak damage any furniture or important items in your home.
  • Do whatever you can to catch the leak. Get a bucket, bowl, or something to contain the water. Put towels down around it too if you have to. The floor can get damaged too.
  • Minimize the drywall damage by poking holes in the ceiling. You might not like the sound of this, but if there is bubbling then there is water trapped up there. Reduce the water pressure by putting a pencil in the drywall in several places, this will allow the trapped water to leak through and will cause less damage later. Picture it all bursting at once.
  • Your insurance company will want to see pictures documenting the damage and the location of the leak. Take many pictures and with different angles.

Finally, contact a roofing company you can trust. They will examine the damaged area as well as the entire roof. Kirkey Roofing will let you know the full extent of the damage, and whether a reroof or roof repair is necessary. We have been trusted in the Sarasota, Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, Lakewood Ranch, and Bradenton areas for 70 years!
